Origin: China, Japan, Europe

Materials: Heads of skin, fastened by tack, and a body and handle of red painted wood. Inscribed lines on handle. 

Family: Percussion

Similar: Rattle or pellet drum, shaker, daiko, bolanggu, tao.

Use: Move between the palms of the hand to make spin and force the wood balls to beat the skin.

Social context: Often used in religious ritual (particularly Tibet, Mongolia, India, and Taiwan), small versions are also used in East Asia as children's toys or as noisemakers by street vendors.
