Origin: North America

Materials: Rattan, wood, with short handle, striped furskin. The object depicts a raven formed by its oval spherical nest in the body.

Family: Percussion

Similar: Raven, shaman rattle, rahistin

Use: The rattle used to be held in the right hand with the beak down and the stomach up so that the raven did not fly its way, as it is once said to have done.

Social context: In religious ceremonies by Northern American shamans in healing rituals. A story well known in mythology is the Raven and the Sun, where the Raven steals the sun and brings light into the world
